A pint for a pint

Hinsdale, IL –Adventist Hinsdale Hospital blood center is hosting a month long blood drive. When you donate blood or platelets during the month of July, you will receive a coupon for one free pint of Baskin Robin’s ice cream. The blood center is located at 121 N. Elm Street, level B2, and is open from Monday to Friday. Hours vary so call 630-856-7837 for an appointment.

“Whether it's a five year-old battling leukemia, a mother of five injured in a serious car accident or a 55 year-old man having heart surgery, every day, hundreds of people in our communities need blood,” said Julie Chin Bloom, donor recruiter at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s Blood Center. “Our blood center provides the critical link between blood donors who generously give the gift of life and the local patients who need this lifesaving gift.”

Many people are unaware of the lifesaving impact that giving blood can have on people. Every three seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion. About 60 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood, yet less than five percent do. Simply put, blood transfusions save lives; there's no substitute for human blood.

The blood and platelet donation process usually takes less than one hour. Prospective donors first complete a health history questionnaire and screening interview. The next step involves a brief physical examination of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and a test for anemia. If the prescribed medical requirements are met, a unit (about one pint) of blood is drawn from the donor. Afterwards, donors are served refreshments while remaining seated for 15 minutes.

There area a few general requirements to be eligible to donate blood and platelets.

  • AGE: 17 (16 year-olds can donate with written permission of parent or guardian)
  • WEIGHT: At least 110 pounds
  • DIET: A well-balanced meal is recommended within four hours of donation.
  • HEALTH: General good health
  • IDENTIFICATION: Valid identification such as a driver's license, state identification card, passport, social security card, etc.

Donating blood and platelets is safe, simple and it saves lives. Call today and schedule your appointment, 630-856-7837.
