Immediately after surgery, you will be taken to the Recovery room where nurses will monitor your post-anesthesia care. The length of time in Recovery room varies depending on the type of surgery and anesthetic you received, but generally this process takes 1 - 1 ½ hours.
A nurse may ask you to describe any pain using a "pain scale". The scale ranges from zero to ten. Zero means you are comfortable while ten means you are having severe pain. Pain medication will be given directly through the IV at this time to give rapid pain relief.
After discharge from Recovery room, you will be taken back to your room in Day Surgery or admitted to your inpatient room. Here you will be reunited with your family.
Family Waiting Area
A large comfortable family waiting area is located off the elevator on the second floor. Family members may wait here and will be notified first when you arrive in the Recovery room and a second time when you are transferred to your room.
The surgeon will speak with family members here in private consultation rooms. Pagers are readily available if family wishes to leave the area. Complimentary coffee is available.
