A new era of robotic surgery has been ushered in at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital with the arrival of the da Vinci® Si Surgical system.
The da Vinci® Si Surgical System—the latest generation robot available—provides our experienced physicians with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. The surgeon's hands are at the controls of state-of-the-art robotic technology, allowing them to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched vision, precision, dexterity and control.
To keep their skills sharpened, our surgeons use a skills simulator designed to improve their proficiency with the da Vinci Si controls in a virtual environment. This console is ergonomically designed to allow the surgeon to sit while operating. Four interactive robotic arms use proprietary EndoWrist® instruments to increase the surgeon’s range of motion, and the high-definition 3D vision system allows for optimum visual access to the surgical site.
Other exciting features of the da Vinci Si include:
- Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10x magnification
- New optional dual console allows second surgeon to provide assistance
- Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
- Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand
- Updated and simplified user interface to enhance operating room efficiency
- New ergonomic settings for greater surgeon comfort
For the patient, benefits may include:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Shorter recovery time
- A faster return to normal daily activities
Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital staff are already experienced in robotic surgery, and our highly trained robotics team is excited to bring such advanced procedures to La Grange and the surrounding community. It's just one more way we're providing world-class health care right in your own backyard.
Examples: Hysterectomy and Prostatectomy
Hysterectomy and prostatectomy are excellent examples of the innovations available from the da Vinci Si Surgical System. As the images below reveal, incisions for each procedure are reduced from one large site to several very small sites in the abdomen, allowing for a much less invasive experience for patients.
Patient Dennis Cantrell had minimally invasive gallbladder surgery at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital performed by Dr. Eric Yang using the da Vinci Si Surgical System. He had this to say about his experience:
“There is no comparison to the hernia surgery I had six years ago. My recovery with this surgery has been 100 percent easier. I have had far less pain and more energy. After the hernia surgery, I was laid up for a couple of weeks. But this time, I’ve already been shopping and I just walked to the pond with my grandson. I was moving around so much within days of the surgery that my wife told me to take it easier.”
