Surgery Day - What to Expect

We hope the following information will help you feel more comfortable and informed as you prepare for surgery.

Please contact Pre-Admission Services at 630-856-7074 with any questions.

Arrival at the Hospital

Each patient’s surgery time is custom to the individual patient and the procedure being performed, however your surgeon or the surgeon prior to your case may run over the scheduled time. The case prior to yours may cancel. Please be available during the day in case your surgery time changes. You will receive a call the day before your surgery to confirm your check–in time. Please provide us with a phone number where you can be reached in case your time changes. If you are paying your financial responsibility the day of surgery, please stop at Registration 10 minutes before your arrival time.

What to Expect

When you arrive at your assigned location you will be prepared for your surgery with the pre-op staff for at least an hour. You will then be transported to the Pre-Anesthesia area where the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and OR nurse are preparing for you. You may spend an hour or more in this area before going to the operating room. Your family members will be in the waiting area and will be kept informed of your progress through a tracking board and/or nurse liaison's verbal reports.

After surgery you will be taken to the recovery area. You will spend at least an hour in recovery while the staff monitor your progress. Your patience is important as the recovery process is also custom to your procedure and your current health circumstance. When you are ready to move from recovery, you will be taken back to your arrival area before being discharged or assigned to a room if you are staying in the hospital.
.

Attention same day surgery patients: transportation home after surgery must be arranged in advance. You must have a responsible adult driver to drive you home or accompany you if you take a cab home. You may not drive for 24 hours after surgery. A responsible adult should be available to you for the first night (after receiving anesthesia).
