For the more than 2,500 children we treat each year, superior, compassionate care is the standard at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. To ensure that we meet that standard, our state-of-the-art Pediatric Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit are dedicated exclusively to treating children. Both units were carefully designed with the unique needs of children first and foremost in mind.
Our 18-bed Pediatric Unit and our five-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit resemble playrooms almost as much as hospital rooms. A playful, outdoorsy park décor fosters relaxation and stress relief. There is a flat screen television, Playstation 2 unit, and online access for laptop computers at every bedside. Each bed is also equipped with a telemetry monitoring system, so parents can be assured that their children are entertained even as their vital signs and other crucial, medical information are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A centralized computer is available for checking e-mail.
There are special treatment areas for children who must undergo painful procedures such as blood drawing and IV insertion – this allows the child’s bed to be a “safe zone,” and decreases the anxiety of young patients.
Security is always a priority in our Pediatric Units. Our pediatric units are “lock down” areas of the hospital. You will be buzzed in and out when you visit your child. Your child will be given an identification band and parents and/or guardians will be given matching bands to wear during the child’s stay. Children are only discharged to an individual wearing a matching band unless previous written arrangements have been made. Our staff members are easily identifiable by picture name badges with bright pink borders.
Our caregivers are as outstanding as the facilities in which they work. Our pediatric staff specializes in caring for children. Registered professional nurses in our pediatric units are trained in pediatric critical care and pediatric life support. Our physicians are on call 24 hours a day and are trained in a wide array of pediatric sub-specialties, including pediatric neurosurgery, pulmonology, surgery, anesthesiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, hematology/oncology, metabolic diseases, genetics, otolaryngology, endocrinology, plastic surgery, and gastroenterology.
If your child needs anesthesia, we have highly specialized sedation equipment designed to safely and effectively administer anesthetics to our smallest, youngest patients. Should your child need Emergency Department care, we have nurses on our ED staff who are specifically trained in pediatric emergency medicine. We also have a separate waiting room in the ED exclusively for children and their parents.
