During your stay, your medical records are reviewed to assure that the treatment given is necessary, appropriate and in accordance with recognized standards of care. This review process assures, you, your insurance company, and the government that you are paying only for necessary hospitalization services and that the care is of the highest quality and provided in a cost-effective manner.
Your Hospital Bill
Your bill will reflect all of the hospital services you receive during your stay. Charges will fall into two
- A basic daily rate which includes your room, meals, nursing care, housekeeping and telephone.
- Charges for special services which include items your physician orders for you, such as x-rays or laboratory tests.
If you have certain tests or treatments, you may receive a separate bill from physicians you did not see in person. These bills are for professional services rendered by these doctors in diagnosing and interpreting test results while you were a patient. Pathologists, radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, emergency room physicians and medical specialists perform these services. Because these physicians are neither employees nor agents of the hospital, they are legally required to submit separate bills. Adventist Midwest Health hospitals accept most major insurance carriers, Medicare and Medicaid.
During your registration process, the admitting department gathered your insurance information and
asked you to sign an assignment of insurance benefits and release of information form. This form allows the hospital to bill your insurance company on your behalf and to collect the covered benefits. While you are in the hospital, the patient financial services department contacts your insurance company to confirm benefits and works to ensure that all necessary insurance information is submitted.
Your plan may have special requirements such as a second surgical opinion or pre-certification for
certain tests or procedures. It is your responsibility to make sure the requirements of your plan have been met. If your plan’s requirements are not followed, you may be financially responsible for all or part of your bill.
