Wound Care Center honored for excellence, outstanding teamwork

La Grange – Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital’s Wound Care Center was recently given three prestigious awards by the nation’s leading wound care management company.

“In the past, people had to travel far distances to find this high level of wound care,” said Lary A. Davis, chief executive officer of Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. “These awards are evidence of our accomplishments and service to our past patients as well as our commitment to future ones.”

For achieving a high rate of healing and receiving high patient satisfaction scores in 2012, the wound care center was named both a Center of Distinction and a Center of Excellence. It was also honored as a Center of the Year for its teamwork, outstanding clinical outcomes and financial success.

In 2012, the wound care center staff – which includes seven physicians - saw 500 new patients, said Dawn Marsillo, program director of the wound care center.

“There is such a demand for our services and especially our hyperbaric oxygen chambers that we are bringing in two additional chambers,” Marsillo said. “Our goal is to be the top healing center for people suffering from chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, surgical wounds and more.”

For most people, cuts and scratches heal within days or weeks. But for those whose natural healing process is hampered, a simple sore can become a complex medical problem. Without proper treatment, these problem wounds can hamper physical activity, quality of life and, in some cases, be debilitating. This growing problem is spurred by the aging of America and the increase in diabetes. Of the 18.5 million Americans with diabetes, an estimated 1.8 million will suffer from a problem wound, experts say.

An outpatient, hospital-based program, Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital’s Wound Care Center offers state-of-the-art outpatient clinical wound care and hyperbaric medicine. The center opened in 2008 and its multidisciplinary approach has an incredibly high success rate. It works in conjunction with the patient’s primary care physician, serving as an adjunctive service for the referring physician and specializing in the treatment of problem wounds.
