Hinsdale, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has re-designated Adventist Hinsdale Hospital as a Level II trauma center, hospital officials announced. Such a designation guarantees that the hospital has adequate resources to deal with severely injured patients at all times. In 2007, the hospital recorded 298 trauma visits, up from 262 in 2006.
In order to receive state designation as a Level II trauma center, hospitals must: demonstrate that their physicians receive ongoing trauma education; staff the emergency room with trauma nurse specialists; ensure that an on-call trauma surgeon can respond to the hospital within 30 minutes; equip their emergency room, operating room and intensive care unit with certain equipment; and conduct education campaigns in the community, among other regulations outlined by the IDPH.
“This re-designation assures that Adventist Hinsdale Hospital will continue to provide the best care to our trauma patients,” said Lesia Douglas, vice president/chief nursing officer at the 436-bed hospital. “It also demonstrates to our community the importance of having a trauma center that offers high-quality care so close to home.”
Re- designation typically takes place every two years. Two IDPH surveyors visited Adventist Hinsdale Hospital in April to inspect the facility and its equipment, review charts and question nurses and other medical team members on proper protocol.
The trauma unit’s community education programs focus on injury prevention, said Jennifer Senft, trauma nurse coordinator. In the summer, hospital officials promote the use of bicycle helmets by donating a free helmet to every child pediatric patient treated for a bicycle-related head injury. The emergency department staff also holds a teddy bear clinic, providing teddy bears to local children along with injury prevention and safety education materials.
Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital also recently was re-certified as a Level II trauma center.
