June is a great time to start hearing better

Hinsdale, IL – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is hosting “Better Hearing Without Hearing Aids and When to Accept Them,” a class geared towards helping people hear better. The class will be presented by Dr. Richard J. Wiet and Dr. Kathleen Highhouse from 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at the Hinsdale Community House, 415 W. Eighth St., Hinsdale. Topics include ear surgery, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices for television and radio, and aural rehabilitation.

“Many people think that hearing loss is only prevalent for the elderly, but it is wise for people of all ages to get their hearing checked to prevent any problems in the future,” Wiet said. “Ten percent of Americans suffer from noise-induced hearing loss.”

The free class is open to the community and geared to people age 17-75. Many people are unaware that three out of every 1,000 school-age children have a profound hearing loss, and 60 percent of people with hearing loss are between the ages of 21 and 65.

Physicians at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s Center for Hearing Restoration and Ear Research offer patients and their families a comprehensive range of diagnostic services and treatments for ear and hearing problems. This includes profound deafness treated with cochlear implants, perforations of the ear drums, otosclerosis, acoustic tumors, balance disorders and facial nerve problems. Wiet and other nationally recognized physicians at the center provide local patients an opportunity to receive expert services close to home. The center also participates in national clinical trials, giving patients an opportunity to be among the first to experience cutting-edge medicine.
