Hospital employees drop off nearly 100 backpacks for kids

Bolingbrook – Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital officials dropped off nearly 100 supply-filled school backpacks for students in the Valley View Public School District 365U. This is the third year hospital employees spearheaded the community effort, tripling the number of backpacks collected last year.

The brand-new backpacks were stuffed with grade-appropriate supplies – including crayons, markers, notebooks, and folders – for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. Donations were collected July 22 – Aug. 19 and dropped off Tuesday at Bernard J. Ward Elementary School in Bolingbrook.

“We didn’t set a numerical goal for the backpack collection this year, but I have a long-bed pickup truck that I wanted to fill and we did that,” said Kathy Mitchell, chief nursing officer at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

The first day of the 2008-09 school year in District 365U is Monday for students in grades 1-12 and Tuesday for kindergarteners.

“Our teachers are very excited and our social worker will make sure that these backpacks go into the right hands,” said Ward Elementary School Principal Theodore F. Warpinski.
