Hospital, emergency responders hold emergency drill

Hinsdale, IL - Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and the village of Hinsdale Emergency Services conducted a “critical incident response” exercise Tuesday at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. The incident tested the established procedures of hospital staff and local emergency responders, who worked together to resolve the incident peacefully.

“We are proud of the professional way our team responded to this drill and look forward to continuing our cooperation with the Hinsdale Police Department and other members of the local emergency response team,” said Jim Today, administrative director of facilities at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “Such training exercises are vital to maintaining the safety of our patients, physicians, staff and guests during these uncertain times.”

Lee Stapel, director of plant operations at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, played the role of an active shooter on a spree within various controlled areas of the hospital, including a vacant fourth floor wing. Hospital staff then called 911 and the security team put the hospital on lockdown. A “standoff” then ensued at an apartment building on the hospital campus involving about 100 members of the police department, fire department, village public works department, and the SWAT team. About 70 hospital employees directly participated in the drill, but hundreds more staff and physicians were in the building during the exercise.

Three years in the making, this training is the largest full-scaled critical incident preparedness exercise performed by local officials with Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. All visitors and employees of the hospital were notified that this incident was a drill and no one was in harm’s way.

“In the aftermath of the Feb. 2 shooting at the Tinley Park Lane Bryant store and the Feb. 14 rampage at Northern Illinois University, it is imperative that our local emergency personnel and hospital staff are prepared to respond to such incidents,” said Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom.
