Why Choose La Grange Family Medicine Residency?

Managing every facet of a patient's health requires current and complete knowledge of disease treatment and prevention, along with outstanding diagnostic and clinical skills.

The Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency offers a wealth of clinical experiences necessary to develop and refine skills in these areas in a challenging, supportive environment.

Broad Patient Care Experience

The three-year residency program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, follows the curriculum guidelines of the American Academy of Family Physicians. It offers many opportunities to manage routine and difficult cases on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Residents see a wide range of pathologies in a diverse patient population and master important office and hospital procedures using current techniques and equipment. This well-rounded experience prepares doctors for certification by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Continuity of Care

Relationships form between the hospital and its residents that often continue beyond completion of the three-year program. ALMH views its residents as doctors who may want to maintain ties to the hospital for many years - perhaps for their entire professional careers.

Fifty-eight percent of our residents have established practices in surrounding communities and maintain this hospital affiliation. Residents begin developing a patient base their first year, as they focus on long-term relationships.

Strong Hospital-Physician Partnership

Since its inception in 1976, the Family Medicine Residency Program has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the hospital's administration - a partnership based on open communication and mutual respect. As the only residency at Adentist La Grange Memorial Hospital, the program receives strong financial and philosophical support.

The Family Medicine Residency Program faculty cares about its residents as individuals, respects their unique talents and supports their growth as people and physicians. This emphasis on individual development yields confident, astute clinicians.

Recognizing that doctors with clear insight into their own behaviors and attitudes are better equipped to care for others, the program emphasizes an awareness of the psychosocial interactions inherent in doctor-patient relationships.

Each resident is treated like an attending physician from the start. Although monitored closely, residents have the same authority, privileges and patient care responsibilities as attending physicians and are treated with equal respect by hospital personnel. Residents have time to study, conduct research and pursue personal and professional interests.

An Inviting Approach to Education

Faculty and attending physicians are accessible and take a keen interest in each resident's progress, providing frequent feedback and modifying patient care responsibilities and education to reflect that progress.

The high faculty-resident ratio makes it possible for attending physicians to give residents much individual attention. The program encourages residents to gradually increase their clinical responsibilities, an approach that provides the freedom to develop diagnostic and clinical skills in a protected environment.

From the beginning, residents act as the patient's primary physician, write all orders and admit patients to hospital and clinical services. Residents manage their own cases when they feel confident enough to do so, receiving support and consultations from attendings as needed.
