William J. Nelson, M.D.

Dr. Nelson has been director of the La Grange Family Medicine Residency Program and the LMH Family Medicine Center since 1982. Before joining LFMR, he served at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois as director of its Family Medicine Residency Program. Prior to these appointments, he was in private practice for 13 years. Dr. Nelson is an assistant professor in the departments of Family Medicine at Rush Medical College and the University of Illinois-Chicago's Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at MacNeal Hospital. Dr. Nelson has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching. |

Kenneth Kessel, M.D.

In 1970, Dr. Kessel founded the first family practice residency program in Illinois at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, where he served as director for 18 years. He also founded the Dependency Treatment Center at MacNeal and was director of that center for three years. Dr. Kessel became involved with LFMR when he was asked to create the Geriatric Fellowship Program at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. Dr. Kessel currently serves as coordinator of geriatrics education for the residency program. As senior attending physician at LMH, he maintains a private practice in Countryside, Illinois. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Dr. Kessel completed a rotating internship and general practice residency with MacNeal. He has since served as a professor and lecturer at many area universities and is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Rush Medical College. Dr. Kessel holds a certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics.

Daniel Hunter-Smith, M.D.

Dr. Hunter-Smith joined the La Grange Family Medicine Residency Program in 1994, bringing extensive experience in the area of geriatrics.
After graduating from Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Hunter-Smith completed his residency program at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois, serving as Chief Resident. After four years with rural public health science practice in Kentucky, he came to LFMR, where he completed a geriatric fellowship. Upon graduating, he served as faculty for four years in the Geriatric Fellowship Program. Dr. Hunter-Smith holds a certificate in Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. |

Daphne Tessalee, M.D.

After receiving her medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1994, Dr. Tessalee graduated from Rush-Illinois Masonic Family Medicine Residency in 1997. She continued with the program an additional year as a Fellow, developing more intensive skills in obstetrics and teaching. She supervises gynecologic procedures and the residents' OB experiences. She is also the site Director for the Family Medicine Student Clerkship. |

Jennifer Swoyer, D.O.

After receiving her medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996, Dr. Swoyer graduated from the LaGrange Family Medicine Residency Program in 1999. Dr. Swoyer was in private practice for 5 years and then joined the LaGrange Family Medicine Residency Program in June 2004. |

Irene Thomas
Thevatheril, M.D.

After receiving her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 1998, Dr. Thomas Thevatheril graduated from the Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's-Illinois Masonic Hospital Family Practice Residency in 2001 and completed a Faculty Development Fellowship in 2001 at Cook County Hospital. Dr. Thomas Thevatheril joined the residency program in January 2005 and has a private practice in Hinsdale. |

Dipankar Mukhopadhyay, M.D.

A specialist in pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology, Dr. Mukhopadhyay instructs residents on their pediatric rotations in all three years of training. Dr. Mukhopadhyay received his medical degree from the University of Calcutta and completed an internship in pediatrics at Bellevue Hospital, New York. He served as Chief Resident at the University of Chicago and at Children's Hospital of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Mukhopadhyay also completed a fellowship in infectious disease at Montreal Children's Hospital, Montreal, Canada. |

Thomas Cahill, PhD

Dr. Cahill joined the La Grange Family Medicine Residency Program in 1980 as the Director of Behavioral Sciences. He received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Indiana State University and completed a clinical psychology internship at Illinois Masonic Medical Centre. Dr. Cahill teaches behavioral science to residents over the course of their three years in the program. Residents can refer patients to Dr. Cahill for counseling and be present for the visits. Dr. Cahill's practice includes psychotherapy and consultation with adults, children and families. |
