Young hospital donor to receive community award

La Grange, IL – A La Grange girl who became the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation’s youngest donor ever will be honored by the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Samantha Tracy, a 10-year-old who is in fourth grade at Spring Avenue Elementary School, gave more than $500 to the foundation last year. The funds were proceeds from a backyard café the young chef hosted in the summer of 2007.

Samantha will receive the President’s Award from the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry at its 2008 awards banquet next week. The banquet is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 at the William Tell Banquets at the Holiday Inn in Countryside.

“Samantha is pretty excited,” said her mom, Beth, who plans to attend the awards ceremony with Samantha and other family members. “We have to go out and get a new outfit for her.”

An avid cook, Samantha came up with the idea of hosting a café breakfast or lunch for her friends and neighbors. Her mother, Beth, loved the idea and wanted to teach her daughter about giving back to others. After meeting Beth Leuck, executive director of the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation, and taking a tour of the hospital, Samantha wanted her gift to go to the foundation.

“Samantha’s generosity is so touching to all of us here at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital,” Leuck said. “Perhaps her gift will start a trend when others realize you’re never too young to help your community.”

The President’s Award is a special award from chamber president Steve Palmer created to recognize Samantha’s generous community spirit.
