Hinsdale – Adventist Paulson Pediatric Rehabilitation
and the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation are partnering to host a June 23 walk to help families pay for ongoing therapy for their children.
The first-ever “little feet, BIG hearts” walk starts at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 23 at Ty Warner Park, near the corner of Plaza and Blackhawk drives in Westmont. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
In addition to the one-mile walk, there will be food and raffles offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Families are also invited to stay and play in the park, sand area or splash area (additional cost) after the event.
Every year, Paulson encounters situations where a family’s insurance benefits do not fully cover all the necessary therapies that their child needs. Paulson has supported families in need since 2005, providing $5,000 per patient whose insurance coverage falls short before the year ends.
Carla Pister, manager of Adventist Paulson Pediatric Rehabilitation, said the program was started because of her ongoing frustration with one particular child’s insurance coverage running out every July.
“This child’s parents then had to decide what therapies to cut back on for the rest of the year since, even with a self-pay discount, the cost for all his therapies each week was overwhelming,” Pister said.
Parent Lara Suleiman of Oak Brook is part of a group of Paulson parents helping organize this year’s walk. “The ongoing therapies are needed, but not all insurance companies cover everything,” Suleiman said.
The parents supporting Paulson each have children who receive rehabilitation services there. Suleiman’s daughter, Jayda, has been going to Paulson since she was 3.
“We consider the people at Paulson our family,” Suleiman said. “It’s not just about the therapy over there. The moment we enter we get hugs and lots of love.”
Since founding the grant, Paulson has supported 30 families, providing over $110,000 for therapy services. The grant is run through the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation.
In addition to walk participants, event sponsors and donors are sought. Sponsorships range from $250 to $500 or more, and raffle donations are also being accepted.
