Pharmacy manager recognized by Adventist Hinsdale Hospital

Terry Fisher came up with the popular idea of delivering prescription medicines to employees who work offsite  at the three other Adventist Midwest Health hospitals to save time and money. Hinsdale –  Terry Fisher knows pharmacies. He has worked in the industry since 1966 as a pharmacist in various capacities, including pharmacy owner.


“You learn a lot when you own your own business,” said Fisher, a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy.


Twelve years ago, after considering the cost of insurance and potential staffing issues should he need time off, Fisher sold the pharmacy he owned in Riverside, Illinois to Osco Drug Company. He continued to work there for about a year. He left Osco to join the pharmacy staff at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, where he was promoted to manager of the outpatient pharmacy several years ago.


After becoming manager, Fisher suggested enhancing the service that the pharmacy offered to employees. The small outpatient pharmacy at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital fills prescription orders for patients being discharged, and also fills prescriptions for employees. Fisher proposed that the pharmacy begin filling the employee prescriptions that called for 90-day supplies of medication. This is generally covered under the mail order benefit of the employee’s prescription drug coverage. Also, Fisher thought, why not deliver?


“When I made the proposals, they didn’t think it would work,” Fisher said. “But it did work, and filling prescriptions for employees is a big part of what we do. It’s a real savings for our employees because they don’t pay the higher prices at outside pharmacies. And they don’t have to make a special trip to get their prescriptions because their medications are delivered to their work place. It saves the hospital money, because it reduces the cost of the drug benefit. And it eliminates the cost of mailing a 90-day supply.”


For his commitment to the Adventist Midwest Health mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, Fisher was one of five employees recognized with the organization’s Pillar Award at a recent leadership conference.


“The innovations that Terry made have saved our staff members hundreds of dollars in prescription costs,” said Michael J. Goebel, chief executive officer of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “It has truly enhanced our benefit plan.”


Fisher fills prescriptions for employees at all four hospitals owned by Adventist Midwest Health, and for employees at any location. The outpatient pharmacies at Adventist Bolingbrook and Adventist GlenOaks hospitals also fill prescriptions for their employees, but Fisher still fills more employee prescriptions than any other location.


The medications are delivered by courier to Adventist hospitals and to the Adventist Tallgrass office in Bolingbrook five days a week. Deliveries are made to other Adventist facilities four days a week. Fisher also fills prescriptions for patients who are served by Adventist St. Thomas Hospice in Hinsdale.


The pharmacy service is open seven days a week. His staff members process orders on weekends. Monday through Thursday, Fisher arrives at work about 4 a.m., and leaves about 3 p.m. On Fridays, he generally works from his Mokena home.


“Our mission here, extending the healing ministry of Christ, is very refreshing,” Fisher said. “I am involved in making sure we have the best prescription plan for the hospital. I like the way they do things here. I have a wonderful group of people who work for me. That makes my job a whole lot easier.”


Fisher is the father of eight children, the grandfather of 20 and is a member of the Orland Park Christian Reformed Church. Between the long hours and the long commute, his strong work ethic would seem to be an exhausting proposition for 20-somethings. But Fisher is 68 and still going strong.


“Seven of our eight children are daughters,” Fisher said. “We had all that school and all those weddings. That’s why I’m still working.”


Pillar award nominations are solicited from Adventist Midwest Health’s senior leadership team. To be eligible, nominees must demonstrate commitment to the organization’s “S.H.A.R.E.” standards of behavior: Sense, Help, Acknowledge, Respect and Explain. They must also demonstrate measurable results on the quarterly goals set for their departments. These goals are organized under the seven categories, or pillars, of spiritual life, people, clinical, service, community, growth and stewardship.
