Hinsdale – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the western suburbs to offer the most advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system.
The new Ingenia Wide-Bore 3 Tesla MRI scanner provides the clearest, most detailed images of the anatomy currently available, according to its developer, Royal Philips Electronics. The scanner became available in the U.S. in 2011 and is among the most technically advanced scanners in the state of Illinois.
“Providing the best diagnosis and treatment means investing in the latest imaging technology,” said Michael J. Goebel, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s chief executive officer. “This machine is quiet, spacious, fast and does not emit radiation – all benefits for our patients.”
MRI imaging allows doctors to view the contrast in soft tissues, making it especially useful in imaging the brain, muscles and heart, and detecting tumors. It is used widely in injury diagnosis.
Experts say the new 3T MRI scanner is so precise it can detect and identify tiny tissue tears, small tumors, intricate blood vessels and abnormalities that cannot be viewed using other MRI scanners.
“This technology enables physicians to diagnose and treat patients faster and more accurately,” said Dr. Yazan Kaakaji, a diagnostic radiologist who treats patients at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “It helps in planning for surgery and for a whole array of clinical procedures. This means better care and better outcomes for our patients.”
The new 3T MRI scanner offers a number of features to enhance patient comfort and reduce anxiety. Patients can listen to music during the scanning. The wide-bore refers to a 70-centimeter opening, the widest available. Usable images can be obtained despite small movements, such as those common in examining children. The table has an enhanced weight capacity to better accommodate obese patients. Preparation time for the exam is greatly reduced because of the speed of the scanner; some scans can take as little as 15 minutes. Board-certified radiologists are on site to read images.
