Hinsdale – As technical manager of women’s services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s DuPage Imaging Center, Sandy Mueller, BA, RT (R) (M), RDMS, knows mammograms are not a pleasant experience for women, especially if the imaging detects potential problems. In an effort to ease the stress, she introduced coffee, tea and massages at DuPage Imaging  Center in Hinsdale and at Westmont Imaging Center.

“Getting a mammogram can be stressful – even scary,” the Downers Grove resident said. “Our goal is to make our patients as comfortable and relaxed as possible to reduce their stress.”

Mueller’s work with patients is more than just a job, and she reveals her passion outside of work by making presentations, hosting events for breast cancer survivors, and walking in fundraisers for research.

“I feel a personal connection to breast cancer because I have lost some dear friends to the disease,” Mueller said. “It’s a motivation.”

For her commitment to Adventist Midwest Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, Mueller was one of five Adventist Midwest Health leaders to receive the organization’s pillar award at the quarterly leadership development institute held in January.

“I feel blessed to have a job that I love, and one that allows me to make a difference in some small way,” Mueller said.

Said Alan Schneider, chief patient services officer: “Sandy’s patient satisfaction scores prove that she has accomplished her goal of enriching the patient experience. According to our most recent data, patients rate their care 4.85 on a 5-point scale, a truly outstanding achievement.”

DuPage Imaging Center recently was renovated with new, comfortable furniture and redecorated with warm colors, thanks to donations raised by the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. Patients who undergo a breast biopsy receive a complimentary massage; others pay a small fee for massages. If any abnormalities are detected by the mammogram, a navigation team helps women get referrals and move quickly to the next step in treatment.

DuPage Imaging Center provides ultra sound, vascular ultra sound, CT and MRI scanning and x-ray in addition to mammography. Under Mueller’s management, business increased by 16 percent and expenses decreased by $100,000 in 2009, compared to 2008.
Mueller was also part of a team that worked to achieve a three-year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons, for Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial hospitals. Only seven hospitals in Illinois have attained this achievement and Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is the only accredited breast center hospital in DuPage County.

“It was really a cohesive effort on the part of a lot of individuals and disciplines,” Mueller said of the accreditation.

Mueller is a long-distance runner who has completed 25 marathons. She is currently training for the Wisconsin marathon in May. She lives in Downers Grove with her husband “and a spoiled dog.” She is certified in mammography and breast ultrasound.

Pillar award nominations are solicited from Adventist Midwest Health’s senior leadership team. To be eligible, leaders must demonstrate their commitment to the organization’s “S.H.A.R.E.” standards of behavior: Sense, Help, Acknowledge, Respect and Explain. They must also demonstrate measurable results on the quarterly goals set for their departments. These goals are organized under the seven categories, or pillars, of spiritual life, people, clinical, service, community, growth and stewardship.
