Hospital team garners statewide healthcare PR honors

Adventist Midwest Health’s public relations team won three Pinnacle Awards from the Illinois Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations (ISHMPR) at the organization’s 2010 annual conference Nov. 9. These awards are the highest honors bestowed by ISHMPR, an affiliate of the Illinois Hospital Association and the state’s largest and most prestigious organization dedicated to the advancement of healthcare marketing and communications professionals.

The team, consisting of Regional Director Julie Busch, of Yorkville, and Senior Public Relations Specialist Lisa Parro, of Aurora, is based in Bolingbrook.

“Public relations is more important than ever in the healthcare industry,” said David L. Crane, president and chief executive officer, Adventist Midwest Health. “From shaping public opinion regarding the biggest construction project in Adventist Hinsdale’s history to showcasing our physicians as experts in the Chicago market to shining the spotlight on our high-performing clinical teams, Julie and Lisa sound the trumpet for our hospitals.”

The team was recognized with the following awards:

  • Award of Excellence, Public Relations Project: Adventist Hinsdale Hospital modernization. Sharing in the award was Elizabeth Lively, associate vice president of external affairs for Adventist Midwest Health. In 2009, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital embarked on obtaining approval from the Village of Hinsdale for a $75 million modernization project that will result in all private rooms. The public relations team developed a plan to garner support from employees, key government officials, the media, and community members. The project was approved by both by the village of Hinsdale and the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board; construction is now well underway.
  • Award of Excellence, Integrated Marketing Campaign: Keeping Chicago Well. Sharing in the award was John Ruhl, former associate vice president of marketing for Adventist Midwest Health. In June 2009, Adventist Midwest Health began a three-year partnership with Tribune Media Group, which includes the Chicago Tribune newspaper, WGN-TV and CLTV. The partnership, called Keeping Chicago Well, is a multimedia campaign featuring the physicians of Adventist Midwest Health giving consumers the information they need to keep their families healthy and well. It is the largest integrated marketing campaign in our organization’s history and has increased patient awareness and significantly engaged physicians with our organization. • Award of Merit, Employee Communications: Hearts & Hands. This eight-page full-color magazine launched in the fall of 2008 as an integral piece of the communications strategy surrounding the launch of Adventist Midwest Health’s strategic plan, Transforming Care ~ Transforming Lives. It brings the plan to life by demonstrating how employees play an important role in achieving our goal of improving employee engagement and patient satisfaction. Since the launch of the magazine, employee turnover has decreased and employee satisfaction has increased. Employees across all levels of the organization agree that communication has improved. It also is a source of pride for the high-performing teams recognized within the magazine.

Nearly 50 hospitals and healthcare systems from across the state submitted 150 entries in 23 project categories. Entries were judged by the Georgia Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations on their own merit in accordance with established criteria for project planning, implementation and overall results. The conference and awards presentation took place at the Starved Rock lodge in Utica, Ill. A complete list of award winners will be posted at
