GlenOaks hospital foundation helps young girl’s dream come true

Since she was eight years old, Nicole Lomotan knew she wanted to be a doctor. During the summer of 1998, Lomotan’s father died of brain cancer. The pain and frustration that Lomotan felt during this time gave her the drive to help others faced with the same hardships.

“I was too young to fully understand what was happening, and I hated feeling so helpless and powerless to do something for my father,” said Lomotan. “Since my father’s death I decided that I want to help people and take care of them, so that they can live long, healthy, fulfilling lives with their loved ones.”

Lomotan received the 2008 GlenOaks Hospital Foundation scholarship of $2,000. She is a graduating senior at Glenbard North High School and will attend Northwestern University in the fall. Lomotan’s ultimate goal is to join Doctors Without Borders and go on a medical mission trip to the Philippines after graduating from medical school.

“Nicole has been an inspiration to all of us here at the foundation,” said Karen Lawler, executive director of GlenOaks Hospital Foundation. “She is truly a wonderful young woman that is bound to go far in life.”

The GlenOaks Hospital Foundation has given a total of $34,000 in scholarships since 1997. The award is geared towards local area seniors that plan on studying health care related fields. There have been a total of 11 winners of the award.

The scholarship program is open to high school students that are going into health care related education living within the service area of: Addison, Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lombard, Medinah and Roselle. Recipients of the award are given $2,000 at the beginning of their college careers. Previous winners may reapply for a $1,000 per year award for a maximum of three years.

The candidates of the GlenOaks Hospital foundation award are scored on specific criteria. A committee composed of foundation board members, hospital personnel, and community leaders evaluate the applications based on the established criteria and make their recommendation to the foundation board.
