Friends make annual mammogram a tradition in Hinsdale

Hinsdale – For the past 10 years, a group of west suburban women has turned their annual mammogram appointment into a fun outing.

Sandy Rasmussen, of Downers Grove, books the appointments for herself and two friends at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s Hinsdale Imaging Center: Ann Powell, of Lisle, and Jan Joy, of Westchester. Two other friends, Virginia Bachmann, of Northbrook, and Paula Cyphers, of Westchester, tag along, for support, and the group of five carpools and goes out to lunch afterward.

“When you get caught up in your daily routines, you might not make time for your mammogram,” Rasmussen said. “This way, we can all go together and have some fun.”

The friends religiously get their screening mammograms annually, following the American Cancer Society’s recommendation for all women starting at age 40. None of the women have experienced a breast cancer scare, but Powell has a family history; her mother had breast cancer.

About 230,000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. It is the most common non-skin cancer in women, and the second deadliest. Screening mammograms can lower the breast cancer death rate by 20 to 40 percent.

Sandy Mueller, associate director of oncology outreach for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, commended Rasmussen and her friends for making their health a priority and being there for one another. She encourages other women to do the same.

“Mammograms save lives,” Mueller said. “Friends don’t let friends neglect their mammograms – and going together is one way women can ensure that they and their loved ones don’t put it off.”

For Rasmussen, it’s easier to cross her annual mammogram off her to-do list when she knows she’s not on her own. She also appreciates the inviting atmosphere and caring staff at Hinsdale Imaging Center.

“We like the ladies over there,” Rasmussen said. “They take good care of us.”
