Dr. Bonny Chen Appointed New Chief Medical Officer

Interim Chief Medical Officer (CMO) since February, Bonny Chen, MD, FACEP, has officially been appointed CMO for AMITA Health Adventist Medical Centers, Hinsdale and La Grange.

(Hinsdale, IL) - As the new Chief Medical Officer for AMITA Health Adventist Medical Centers in Hinsdale and La Grange, Bonny Chen, MD, FACEP, brings a wealth of clinical and leadership experience to her new position.

Accomplished in her field, Chen has been with Illinois Emergency Specialists since 2000, assuming the role as quality director for the four hospital emergency medicine group in 2011. For the past three years, Chen also worked with The Joint Commission as an International Surveyor—traveling to 14 different countries and countless hospitals to improve patient safety and quality.

“Dr. Chen was the consummate candidate for the role of CMO,” said Michael Goebel, CEO of AMITA Health Hinsdale and La Grange. “She is a strong leader and clinician who can help us further our overall strategic vision to deliver the highest quality patient care.”

As CMO, Chen will lead the hospitals in areas relating to the continued growth and development of the medical staff, quality, patient safety, risk management and regulatory compliance, among other responsibilities.

Chen is enthusiastic about her new role. “I am honored to have worked with many dedicated and talented people in our hospitals over the past 16 years,” said Chen. “We appreciate our patients, and have created a warm, caring environment in which we are able to fulfill our mission.  We are proud to have these two hospitals serving our community.”

“As CMO, I am excited about the many opportunities I will have to help AMITA Health build upon our already strong leadership positioning—delivering the highest quality health care that is safe, reliable, efficient and patient-centered,” said Chen.

Chen’s experience in emergency medicine has allowed her to interact with virtually all fields of medicine, and her work with The Joint Commission has allowed her to gain a broad understanding of quality, patient safety, accreditation and highly effective hospital operations. Combined with her postgraduate education in business and health information technology, this experience has prepared Chen for the CMO role.

Chen received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School. She completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Cook County Hospital in Illinois and is currently pursuing her MBA at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Isenberg School of Management. Chen is also a Certified Professional in Health Information Technology.
