Community invited to plant-based diet presentation

Learn how to decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke while maintaining a healthy immune system at this free June 4 informational session. See registration information below.

Hinsdale – Community members are invited learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet and how to prepare nutritious and delicious recipes. There will be two duplicate sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m. on June 4. Residents are invited to attend either session.

In 2013, U.S News and World Report ranked plant-based diets as one of the most nutritious and easiest to follow eating plans. The plan emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains, all good sources of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals. They are also naturally lower in calories than foods made from animals, said Sandy Dixon, manager of the Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s cardiopulmonary rehabilitation department. Dixon also oversees the hospital’s CREATION Health Wellness team.

“When you sit down to eat, half of your plate should be covered with fruits and vegetables,” Dixon said. “But most of us know that's easier said than done. Following a plant-based diet will help you fill that plate with the healthy foods you need to feel better on a daily basis.”

During the June 4 presentation, there will be free samples, seed packets and delicious recipes. This free class is sponsored by the CREATION Health team at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and the health ministries from the Hinsdale and La Grange Seventh-day Adventist churches.

For more than 130 years Seventh-day Adventists have recommended following a vegetarian lifestyle because of their belief in preserving the health of the body, mind and spirit. Vegetarian diets have also led to reduced rates of heart attacks and diabetes.
