Coding assistant recognized as Employee of the Year

Bolingbrook – It’s important for medical facilities to have a reliable revenue stream in order to keep serving patients, and that’s where Marisol Agreda comes in. She helps makes sure that doctors who treat the patients of Adventist Midwest Health receive their insurance payments in a timely manner. As a coding assistant for Adventist Midwest Management Services, Agreda corrects billing errors that result in denial of payment for physicians.

 

“My main job is helping with denials when they come back from insurance companies,” said Agreda, a resident of Aurora. “It’s problem-solving after the fact. When we get a denial, I do research to see if the billing was done correctly. If it wasn’t, I find out why. I work closely with insurance companies and staff from our account services team to correct the errors.”

 

For her efficiency in reversing insurance denials, her expertise in preventing billing errors and her willingness to help others, Agreda was named the Adventist Midwest Management Services Employee of the Year.

 

“I’m very proud that she received this honor because she deserves it,” said Agreda’s supervisor, Debbie Damon, coding manager for Adventist Midwest Management Services. “When she discovers a potential problem, she doesn’t say, ‘It’s not my job.’ She collaborates well with other departments and she has helped create policies that prevent mistakes. She is an exemplary employee with a fantastic attitude.”

 

“I deal with medical records, claims sent to workmen’s compensation and any project my manager gives me,” Agreda said.

 

Agreda has worked for Adventist Midwest Management Services on and off for seven years, and has been there steadily since July 2006. She previously worked in the billing department. She is working independently, and with the help of her colleagues, in studying to take her test to become a CCSP, or certified coding specialist for physicians.

 

Agreda was born and raised in Spain. She came to the U.S. at age 19 to work as an au pair, or nanny, for a Clarendon Hills family. The family was so pleased with her they wanted her to stay longer than the one year allowed by her visa. So Agreda obtained a student visa and went to the College of DuPage, while continuing to work for the family. She earned an associate’s degree in business administration. Agreda met her husband at COD, and the couple has a five-year-old son.

 

Agreda has a mother and four sisters in Spain, as well as nieces and nephews, and she tries to visit there every two years. She wants her small son to get to know his mother’s side of the family.

 

Agreda was surprised to be named Employee of the Year and she is quick to credit her co-workers for her success.

 

“My job is rewarding because I feel like I’m making a difference every day,” she said. “And I appreciate the support of my manager and other team members. They are great people to work with.”

 

Agreda was recognized at Adventist Midwest Health’s annual Employee of the Year celebration, held Feb. 10 at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook. Each Employee of the Year receives a plaque and a $1,000 check.
