Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital participates in mass-casualty training exercise
Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital joined forces with 12 other Chicago-area hospitals in erecting a 5,000 square-foot tent city as part of a mass-casualty training exercise. This educational event took place June 27 at Hines VA Hospital, Hines Ill. Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital employees were among approximately 60 people from the Illinois EMS Region 8 medical community who assembled 11 tents in one hour.
The tents were self-contained, mobile, heating and air conditioning capable and configurable to fit the needs of disasters such as earthquakes, regional flooding, large hazardous materials spills, epidemics, and terrorist attacks. In addition to providing alternate patient care sites, many of the tents can also be used as mass decontamination units – thus allowing patients to be sanitized in a fast manner.
“By participating in this large-scale event, our 16-member Adventist Midwest Health team proved our readiness to respond to a disaster,” said Dawn Wujcik RN, EMS coordinator at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. “It took months of planning by hospital emergency personnel from across the region.”
Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals Chief Executive Officer, Rick Wright, referred to the event as a wonderful opportunity to showcase the hospital’s disaster preparedness efforts.
“Preparing for any type of disaster requires meticulous planning by numerous members of our teams,” said Wright. “While you never want disaster to strike, you need to be ready when it does.”
The 13 hospitals that participated in this event along with Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital were Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Memorial Hospital, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Loyola University Hospital, Riveredge Hospital, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, Rush Oak Park Hospital, Resurrection West Suburban Medical Center, Resurrection Westlake Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, and Hines VA Hospital.
