Neurophysiology Laboratory Statement

“There is no scientific study more vital to man than the study of his own brain”
(F.H.C. Crick, 1979)

The Neurophysiology Laboratory at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is dedicated in providing quality testing of the physiologic reactions of the brain, spinal cord, muscles, cranial and spinal nerves.

The lab was established in 1977 and today offers 15 different neurophysiologic procedures. These include the following:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCV)
  • Electronystagogram (ENG)
  • Audiology Testing and Hearing Aid Assessments
  • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER)
  • Visual Evoked Response (VER)
  • Somatosensory Evoked Response (SSEP)
  • Otoacoustic Emission Testing (OAE)-Neonatal Hearing Screen
  • Facial Nerve Operative Monitoring
  • Spinal Nerve Root Operative Monitoring
  • Spinal Cord/Scoliosis Operative Monitoring
  • Polysomnography (Sleep Lab)
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT)-Narcolepsy
  • Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring

These procedures are helpful in diagnosing, recording, and documenting the electrical activity generated by billions of nerve cells and their pathways in our nervous system. Such disorders and symptoms as dizziness, blurred vision, seizures, “pinched” nerves, sciatica, dementia, deafness, multiple sclerosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, Bell’s palsy, scoliosis, insomnia, and early detection of newborn hearing can be evaluated. Many primary diseases of other organ systems may affect the nervous system secondarily such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
