Adventist Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency Faculty


Zewdu Haile, M.D.
Program Director, Designated Institutional Official

Dr. Haile completed his residency at the Royal College of Obstetrics/Gynecology in London, England in 1990.  He also completed a family medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago in 1995.  He then served as faculty at the Mount Sinai Family Practice Residency until 2004.  He joined the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 2004 as faculty and Medical Director. In July 2014, Dr. Haile became Program Director.

Clinical Interests: Evidence-based medicine and office procedures.

Tony Atkin, A.M, LCSW
Teaching Faculty

Tony received his graduate education at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration.  His career spans more than 30 years and has included private practice, supervision, and management positions in a number of agencies.

Clinical Interests:  Adults and adolescents with ADHD.

Elizabeth S. Bockhold, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Bockhold completed her family medicine residency training in 2011 at MacNeal Hospital-Family Medicine Residency in Berwyn, Illinois. Following her residency, she joined Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) as a full-time core faculty.

Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL
Clinical Interests: Pediatrics & women’s care, preventative medicine, procedures, and resident education.
In her spare time, Dr. Bockhold enjoys spending time with her husband and young daughter, reading, cooking/baking and hiking.


Kate Gunnell, M.D., MPH, FAAFP
Medical Student Education Director

Dr Gunnell completed her residency in Family Medicine at University Hospital/Case Western Reserve University in 1993. After completing a Fellowship in Maternal/Child Health at Brown University in Providence, RI, she went to Boston and earned a Master’s in Public Health at Harvard University in 1995. Returning to sweet home Chicago, Dr Gunnell served as teaching faculty and Director of Obstetrics in Family Medicine with Rush-Illinois Masonic Family Medicine Residency. She joined the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 2003 where she is currently the Director of Medical Student Education.

Medical School: Rush Medical College
Clinical Interests: Patient Advocacy, Community-Oriented Primary Care, Women’s Health, International Medicine, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (Faculty Advisor and Instructor).

Alyssa Jeanne Vest Hart, D.O.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Alyssa Jeanne Vest Hart completed her residency in Family Medicine at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Illinois. She spent 1 year completing a Maternal Child Health Fellowship at PCC Family Health Center, a  Federally Qualified Health Center in Chicago, acquiring additional training in high risk obstetrics, operative obstetrics and newborn care. She stayed on at PCC Austin Family Health Center and was faculty for the West Suburban Family Medicine Residency for 4 years and became the Medical Director of PCC Austin. Dr. Hart joined Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency as Core Faculty in 2014. In July 2015 she was appointed the Osteopathic Program Director. Dr. Hart finds teaching residents and medical students very fulfilling. She enjoys providing full scope care to her patients and their families.

Leslie Sleuwen, M.D.
Resident Education Director
Associate Director of Women's Health & OB

Dr. Sleuwen completed her residency in 1998 at Deaconess Family Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.  After finishing her training, she joined the faculty at Deaconess Family Medicine.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to Chicago and joined the teaching faculty at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 1999. She became the director of maternity care in 2002 and is currently the director of resident education.

Clinical Interests: Women’s health, patient education and pediatric obesity.

Krystle Gadrinab-Jones, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Gadrinab-Jones completed her residency at the Adventist Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 2015. Following her residency she joined the HFMR as part-time faculty. She is also currently in private practice in Romeoville, IL.

Darin Jordan, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Jordan completed his Family Medicine residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) and joined the teaching faculty in 2002.  During his residency training, he served as Chief resident.  Dr. Jordan joined an acute care medicine practice at Central DuPage Hospital and serves as one of the medical directors.

Clinical Interests: Emergency medicine, pediatric care. 

Margaret Kirkegaard, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Kirkegaard completed her residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) in 1992.  She joined the HFMR faculty following her residency.

Clinical Interests: Health care policy and issues of health care delivery.

Leo Koenig, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Koenig completed his residency at Lutheran General in 1977.  He has been a member of the Hinsdale Family medicine Residency (HFMR) since 1978.

Thomas V. Mallidi, MD
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Mallidi completed his family medicine residency from Hinsdale Family Medicine in 2015 and joined HFMR as part-time faculty after graduating residency. He is currently in private practice in Hinsdale, IL where he practices primary care, the medical management of obesity, and part-time urgent care work as well.

Christopher Q. Stephan, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Stephan completed his family medicine residency from St. Joseph Hospital Family Medicine Residency (affiliated with The University of Illinois College of Medicine), Chicago, IL in 2007. He joined HFMR as a part-time faculty in 2010. Dr. Stephen is also currently in private practice in Hinsdale, IL

Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL

Clinical Interests: Comprehensive care for the whole family, with an emphasis on preventive medicine.
