Clara L. Carls, D.O.
Program Director

Dr. Carls completed her residency training at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital in Hyde Park.  After graduation, she practiced in a high volume multi-specialty group for 9 years in the southern suburbs of Chicago. In 1998 she joined the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency as Medical Director and was named Hinsdale Family Medicine Attending of the year in 1999. She became Program Director in December 2002.  She recently completed the National Institute of Program Director Development.
Medical School: University of Osteopathic Medicine & Health Sciences
Clinical interests:  Practice Management and office procedures.

 
Kate Gunnell, M.D.,
MPH, FAAFP,
Director of Education

Dr Gunnell completed her residency in Family Medicine at University Hospital/Case Western Reserve University in 1993. After completing a Fellowship in Maternal/Child Health at Brown University in Providence, RI, she went to Boston and earned a Master’s in Public Health at Harvard University in 1995. Returning to sweet home Chicago, Dr Gunnell served as teaching faculty and Director of Obstetrics in Family Medicine with Rush-Illinois Masonic Family Medicine Residency. She joined the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 2003 where she is currently the Director of Education.

Medical School: Rush Medical College
Clinical Interests: Patient Advocacy, Community-Oriented Primary Care, Women’s Health, International Medicine, Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (Faculty Advisor and Instructor).

 
Zewdu Haile, M.D.
Medical Director

Dr. Haile completed his residency at the Royal College of Obstetrics/Gynecology in London, England in 1990.  He also completed a family medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago in 1995.  He then served as faculty at the Mount Sinai Family Practice Residency until 2004.  He joined the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 2004. Currently, he is medical director of the two residency clinics, The Hinsdale Family Medicine Center in Hinsdale and in Bolingbrook.  

Medical School: University of Delhi, New Delhi
Clinical Interests: Evidence-based medicine and office procedures.


Leslie Sleuwen, M.D.
Associate Director of Women’s Health  

Dr. Sleuwen completed her residency in 1998 at Deaconess Family Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.  After finishing her training, she joined the faculty at Deaconess Family Medicine.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to Chicago and joined the teaching faculty at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency in 1999.

Clinical Interests: Women’s health and patient education. 

 
Tony Atkin, A.M., LCSW Teaching Faculty

Tony received his graduate education at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration.  His career spans more than 30 years and has included private practice, supervision, and management positions in a number of agencies.

Clinical Interests:  Adults and adolescents with ADHD.


Daniel Di Iorio, D.C., M.D.
Community Teaching Faculty  

Dr. Di Iorio received his D.C. degree from the National College of Chiropractic Medicine and practiced as a Chiropractor for five years.  Upon completing his residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR), he went into private practice and joined HFMR in April 2003 as a part-time faculty.

Clinical Interests: --Adolescent care and sports medicine. 


Margaret Kirkegaard, M.D.
Teaching Faculty     

Dr. Kirkegaard completed her residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) in 1992.  She joined the HFMR faculty following her residency.

Clinical Interests: Health care policy and issues of health care delivery. 



Darin Jordan, M.D.
Teaching Faculty    

Dr. Jordan completed his Family Medicine residency at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) and joined the teaching faculty in 2002.  During his residency training, he served as Chief resident.  Dr. Jordan joined an acute care medicine practice at Central DuPage Hospital and serves as one of the medical directors.

Clinical Interests: Emergency medicine, pediatric care. 

 
Leo Koenig, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Koenig completed his residency at Lutheran General in 1977.  He has been a member of the Hinsdale Family medicine Residency (HFMR) since 1978.

Geoffrey Kuhlman, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Kuhlman completed his residency at Hinsdale Family medicine residency (HFMR) in 1998.  He completed a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Oklahoma in 1999 after which he joined the faculty of HFMR.

Clinical Interests: Sports medicine.

 
Gerald Lofthouse, M.D.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Lofthouse completed his residency training at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) in 1980.  After his residency, he joined the HFMR faculty and was appointed director from 1993 to 2002. 

Medical School:  Loma Linda School of Medicine, Loma Linda, CA
Clinical Interests: Aerobic conditioning and extreme physiology.

 
Jacqueline Walker, M.D.
Geriatrician,
 Teaching Faculty

Dr. Walker completed her Family Medicine residency training in 1996 from MacNeal Hospital and completed a Geriatric fellowship at Loyola University in 1999.  After completing her residency in 1996, she joined the faculty at Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR).

Clinical Interests: Geriatrics, women’s health. 

 
Rachel Klamo, D.O.
Teaching Faculty

Dr. Klamo completed her family medicine residency training in 2009 at the West Suburban Family Medicine Residency program in Oak Park, Illinois. Following her residency, she joined the faculty at the HFMR. 


Christopher Q. Stephan, M.D.
Teaching Faculty 

Dr. Stephan completed his family medicine residency from St. Joseph Hospital Family Medicine Residency (affiliated with The University of Illinois College of Medicine), Chicago, IL in 2007. He joined HFMR as a part-time faculty in 2010. Dr. Stephen is also currently in private practice in Hinsdale, IL

Medical School: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL

Clinical Interests: Comprehensive care for the whole family, with an emphasis on preventive medicine. 


Anthony Auriemma, M.D.
Teaching Faculty 

Dr. Auriemma completed his family medicine residency from Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency (HFMR) in 2006. During his residency training, he served as Chief Resident. Upon completing his residency, he went into private practice which he is currently practicing in Westmont, Illinois. Dr. Auriemma joined HFMR in 2009 as a part-time faculty.

Medical School: Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL

Clinical Interests: Bariatric Medicine.
