Curriculum
Welcome to the family! After a comprehensive orientation program is completed, Hinsdale Family Medicine residents' first year rapidly takes shape. Your initial year will challenge you; at the end, you will find yourself well on the way to becoming a family physician. Hospital-based rotations include:
First Year
- One to two half days of outpatient office hours per week
- Internal Medicine 8 weeks
- Family Medicine Service 4 weeks
- Obstetrics 8 weeks
- Pediatrics 12 weeks
- Inpatient 8 weeks
- General and Critical Care Floor 4 weeks
- Neonatology 4 weeks
- Outpatient 4 weeks
- General Surgery 8 Weeks
- Cardiology 4 weeks
- Orthopedics 4 weeks
Second Year
As a second-year resident, your experience builds on all the knowledge developed during the first year. Your time in the Family Medicine Centers will be increased to two to three half-days a week. Here, you'll begin to sharpen office skills that will help you build a successful practice.
Assigned rotations the second year include:
- Two to three half days of outpatient office hours per week
- Internal Medicine 4 weeks
- Family Medicine Service 4 weeks
- Critical Care 4 weeks
- Pediatrics Inpatient 4 weeks
- Obstetrics 4 weeks
- Gynecology 4 weeks
- Sports Medicine 4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine 4 weeks
- Psychiatry 2 weeks
- Addiction Medicine 2 weeks
- Allergy 2 weeks
- Otolaryngology 2 weeks
- Dermatology 2 weeks
- Procedures 2 weeks
- Elective 4 weeks
Third Year
During your final year, your skills will be polished and you'll focus on subjects that will best serve you as a family physician. You'll spend three to four half-days in the Family Medicine Centers, but the majority of your time will be devoted to a variety of medicine and surgery electives.
You'll also have the opportunity to take electives at any of Chicago area's medical schools, hospitals, or practices, or any place around the world! Rotations during the final year include:
- Four half days of outpatient office hours per week
- Critical Care 4 weeks
- Family Medicine Service 4 weeks
- Pediatrics Inpatient 4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine 4 weeks
- Neurology 4 weeks
- Geriatrics 4 weeks
- Ophthalmology 2 weeks
- Urology 2 weeks
- Practice Management/ Community Medicine 4 weeks
- Elective 16 weeks
