The Digital Mammography Initiative

For Our Mothers, For Our Daughters, For Ourselves...

We’ve all been touched by breast cancer —a friend, a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter or ourselves. In fact, breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. In 2006, the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation launched a $3.2 million Digital Mammography Initiative to bring the latest digital imaging technology to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s DuPage Imaging Center.

Digital imaging has the potential to detect breast cancer earlier than the older X-ray mammograms and is particularly crucial to detecting cancer among women in their 40s. Abnormalities on the screening mammogram can be viewed immediately by radiologists and sometimes further evaluation can be done immediately. The patient would not have to return at a later date for additional images.

The Foundation Board wanted women in our community to benefit from the latest detection equipment today, rather than in two years when the funding is complete. Though the equipment is now available for patient use, the Foundation is still responsible for its ultimate funding. Without this unprecedented financial commitment, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital would not have been able to acquire digital mammography as quickly.

Fundraising is still ongoing for the Digital Mammography Initiative. Recently, an anonymous donor pledged to match up to $200,000 in donations for the Initiative. Donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar until the $200,000 maximum is reached, for a total of $400,000.
