Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Family Medicine Residency

Welcome From Our Director, Clara L. Carls, D.O.

Dr. CarlsCongratulations on your decision to pursue a career in family medicine. I invite you to come explore our program online and in person- and discover what makes us one of the best family medicine residency programs in the Midwest.

Our program is located in Hinsdale, Illinois- just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, and is the only teaching hospital in DuPage County. Family Medicine residents complete their inpatient training at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, a 350-bed community hospital with many tertiary care departments (see the About Our Program section for specific information about Hinsdale Hospital).

Residents complete a comprehensive curriculum, training with a diverse faculty and renowned specialists. Our faculty of board certified family physicians is dedicated to the professional and personal development of future family physicians. In addition, as the only residents in the hospital, our residents have a unique opportunity to receive 1:1 resident to attending training in every area of the hospital (ICU, medicine, cardiology, ER, surgery, pediatrics, etc).

We strive to continually enhance our program for the benefit of patient care and resident education, while also remembering our proud history and mission statement:

The Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency is an educational training program for family physicians wherein residents and faculty develop and express their principles through excellent patient care, service to the community, and scholarship. We are dedicated to the true meaning of residents' education in healing patients, being faithful to the Family Medicine ideology, Christian values, and being a center of excellence in partnership with Adventist Midwest Health.

At Hinsdale Hospital, our residents, faculty, and support staff truly are a family.
Our residents…

  • Want to treat the whole person: spiritual, mental, physical and social.
  • Enjoy working with people and making a positive impact on patient care
  • Appreciate hands on education that fosters independence and individual growth
  • Seize opportunities to excel
  • Desire a balanced professional and personal life
  • Are team players
  • Want to be a part of a “family” and fulfill the HFM mission

Our program is fully dual-accredited for AOA and ACGME. The AOA Family Medicine Program was granted accreditation in July 2008.
