First Year
Welcome to the family! After a comprehensive orientation program is completed, Hinsdale Family Medicine residents' first year rapidly takes shape. Your initial year will challenge you; at the end, you will find yourself well on the way to becoming a family physician. Hospital-based rotations include:

• One to two half days of outpatient office hours per week
• Internal Medicine 8 weeks
• Family Medicine Service 4 weeks
• Obstetrics 8 weeks
• Pediatrics 12 weeks
• Inpatient 8 weeks
• General and Critical Care Floor 4 weeks
• Neonatology 4 weeks
• Outpatient 4 weeks
• General Surgery 8 Weeks
• Cardiology 4 weeks
• Orthopedics 4 weeks

Second Year
As a second-year resident, your experience builds on all the knowledge developed during the first year. Your time in the Family Medicine Center will be increased to two to three half-days a week. Here, you'll begin to sharpen office skills that will help you build a successful practice. Assigned rotations the second year include: 

• Two to three half days of outpatient office hours per week 
• Internal Medicine 4 weeks 
• Family Medicine Service 4 weeks 
• Critical Care 4 weeks 
• Pediatrics Inpatient 4 weeks 
• Obstetrics 4 weeks 
• Gynecology 4 weeks 
• Sports Medicine 4 weeks

Third Year
During your final year, your skills will be polished and you'll focus on subjects that will best serve you as a family physician. You'll spend three to four half-days in the Family Medicine Center, but the majority of your time will be devoted to a variety of medicine and surgery electives. You'll also have the opportunity to take electives at any of Chicago area's medical schools, hospitals, or practices, or any place around the world! Rotations during the final year include:

• Four half days of outpatient office hours per week 
• Critical Care 4 weeks 
• Family Medicine Service 4 weeks 
• Pediatrics Inpatient 4 weeks
• Emergency Medicine 4 weeks 
• Neurology 4 weeks 
• Geriatrics 4 weeks 
• Ophthalmology 2 weeks

• Elective 16 weeks

Special Clinical Interests
Hinsdale Hospital’s Family Medicine Program prepares residents to provide comprehensive health care to patients of all ages. Our residency offers strong training in medicine and pediatrics, but also provides excellent training in OB/GYN, behavioral health, office-based procedures, women's health, and sports medicine. Elective opportunities are available, and our residents may choose to focus on areas of special interest. Our diverse faculty is ready and willing to help enhance these special areas of training and education.

Procedural Medicine
At Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency, residents learn many procedures throughout their training. All procedures are supervised by attending physicians. Some of the procedures include: 

• Colposcopy 
• Circumcision 
• Skin excision/biopsy 
• Incision and drainage 
• LEEP
• Lumbar puncture 
• Joint injections
• Suturing 
• Wart removal 
• IUD insertion/removal
• NST interpretation
• Casting/splinting

• Neonatal resuscitation 
• Vaginal delivery

Serving the Underserved 
HFMR residents have the opportunity to participate in mission trips and to provide medical care in severely impoverished regions of the world. In 2009, residents, faculty, staff and volunteers traveled to Honduras and provided much-needed medical care to over 1000 men, women and children in this underserved area. In 2010, residents traveled to Costa Rica on yet another medical mission trip.

Other Educational Opportunities
There are many other opportunities to learn and grow professionally through the Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency program. 
Examples include: 

• Electives rotations
• Daily noon conferences: Teaching didactics for residents presented by our teaching faculty and specialists in core family medicine/pediatrics topics
• CME lectures on Thursdays at noon that cover a broad range of medicine topics presented by guest speakers, who are experts in their field
• Morning report: Informal case-based presentation and core medicine review for residents on the medicine service
• Friday morning report: Formal case presentations by residents with teaching faculty present to share teaching points 
• EKG and Radiology conference 
• Behavioral Science and Psychiatry conference, held monthly 
• Wednesday afternoon teaching didactics and procedure labs
• Specialty clinics in Dermatology and high risk OB
• Journal Club
• Practice Management series presented by the HFMR Director for second and third year residents to prepare for work after residency
• Billing, coding, practice set up, PI projects
