Surgical Checklist

What steps do you need to take to help prepare for surgery?

  • Talk to your physician’s office about special instructions or special preparations for your surgery.
  • Stop smoking. If you are unable to quit, at least cut down on the amount you smoke before surgery.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to your surgery. Alcoholic beverages include beer, wine, and/or liquor.
  • Talk to your physician about taking medications before your surgery if you have additional questions not answered by the HealthPAS nurse. This may include questions related to aspirin, ibuprofen, over the counter medications, medications for heart disease and diabetes, etc.
  • Ask about possible reactions between medications you currently take and any post-operative medications you may need.
  • Consult your cardiologist or primary care physician if you take blood thinners.
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up from the hospital and assist you overnight or as directed by the HealthPAS nurse.
  • Call your doctor if you have a fever, cold, or rash. Your surgery may need to be postponed.
  • Follow the special eating instructions given to you by the HealthPAS nurse in your pre-testing appointment/interview.
  • If you have completed an advance medical directive—such as the naming of a person you’d wish to make healthcare decisions for you if you were unable to speak for yourself—you should bring it with you to the hospital.
  • Bring any inhalers and/or CPAP mask & tubing if applicable.
  • Bring this checklist with you.
