Wheaton ‘Biggest Loser’ couple to appear at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital

Glendale Heights – Wheaton’s most famous “losers” will appear at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital to inform and inspire others to be healthy.

As part of the hospital’s new employee wellness initiative, “The Biggest Loser” alumni Jerry and Estella Hayes are scheduled to speak at the hospital March 6. The 65-year-old couple lost a combined 260 pounds in less than eight months after appearing on the seventh season of the NBC reality show in 2009.

“Our employees spend their time here putting patients first, however we want to ensure they’re taking time to care for themselves as well,” said Bruce C. Christian, chief executive officer of Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. “We’re bringing Jerry and Estella here to inspire our nurses and other caregivers to take control of their health and commit to wellness.”

In their presentation to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital employees, the Hayes plan to discuss both their struggles and their dedication to self-improvement. Both Jerry and Estella have kept off their weight for more than two years and enjoy healthy and fit lives. They are no longer being treated for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea or gout. In addition to regaining their health, Jerry also won the Biggest Loser’s $100,000 “at-home” prize, awarded to the contestant who lost the highest percentage of body weight among those voted off the show.

According to Jerry, the key to successful weight loss is having a long-term mindset.

Those of you who have lost weight before, you know the challenges of keeping it off,” he said. “The secret is to make a lifestyle change – not a passing fad.
