U.S. News and World Report Ranks Three AMITA Health Hospitals Among Best in Chicago Metropolitan Area

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Three AMITA Health Hospitals Among Best in Chicago Metropolitan Area

(ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILL., JULY 27, 2015) – U.S. News & World Report has ranked three AMITA Health hospitals – St. Alexius Medical Center, Alexian Brothers Medical Center (ABMC) and Adventist Hinsdale Hospital – among the Best Hospitals in the Chicago metropolitan area.

For the third consecutive year, St. Alexius and ABMC ranked in the top 10 in the Chicago region, with St. Alexius finishing eighth and ABMC ranking 10th. The two hospitals hold the same positions in the magazine’s statewide rankings for Illinois. Adventist Hinsdale Hospital tied for 16th in the Chicago-area rankings and tied for 19th statewide.

“These latest rankings reflect AMITA Health’s commitment to delivering the most efficient, high-quality, faith-based care,” says Mark A. Frey, AMITA Health President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals work tirelessly to implement and to follow best practices for ensuring patient safety and positive outcomes, and they deserve enormous credit for this achievement.”

The Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging and medically complex patients. “A hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” says Ben Harder, U.S. News Chief of Health Analysis.

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties, ranking the top 50 in most of the specialties. Less than 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2015-2016 were nationally ranked in even one specialty.

In rankings by metro area and state, U.S. News recognizes high-performing hospitals that perform nearly at the level of their nationally ranked peers in one or more adult specialties, as well as hospitals that excel in multiple common adult procedures and conditions.

St. Alexius, which is located in Hoffman Estates, Ill., is nationally ranked in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (tied for #45) and is rated as high-performing in six adult specialties – Diabetes & Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology. St. Alexius also is rated as high-performing in two adult procedures/conditions – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure.

Adult specialties designated as high-performing at ABMC include Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology. Adult procedures/conditions rated as high-performing at the Elk Grove Village, Ill., hospital are COPD, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement.

Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is rated as high-performing in two adult procedures/conditions – Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide the nearly 2 million hospital inpatients a year who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing and other data largely determine the U.S. News rankings in most specialties.

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. U.S. News uses the same data, as well as the new Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings, first published in May, to produce the state and metro rankings. The rankings are freely available at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2016” guidebook, available in August from the U.S. News Store at www.usnews.com/store.
