Glendale Heights – Five physicians were honored for their work at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital
with Physician Pillar Awards.
The winners were announced during the hospital medical staff’s annual General Medical Staff Meeting and Dinner May 7 at Eaglewood Resort and Spa in Itasca.
Employees and fellow physicians can nominate medical staff members whom they deem to be outstanding in fulfilling the hospital’s mission and values in their professional and personal lives, said Dr. Theodore Suchy, president of the Adventist GlenOaks Hospital medical staff.
Employees and physicians are given criteria to nominate physicians in five areas – Inclusiveness, Integrity, Excellence, Christian Service and Stewardship.
“These are special physicians who have dedicated themselves to particular areas of expertise,” Suchy said.
The following were honored for their work: Dr. Richard Phillips, Integrity:
Chairman of the Emergency Department, Dr. Richard Phillips of Highland Park has practiced at the hospital since 2013. He has earned the trust and respect of patients and other health care professionals through his exceptional work.
“Dr. Phillips always encourages teamwork and strives for excellence in all he does,” according to his nomination. “Staff and patients adore him. He is a great director and a class act.”
“I believe in being as open and honest with our patients and their families as I can when caring for them, so they understand everything we take into account when determining the best course of care,” Phillips said. Dr. Donna Kim, Christian Service:
Radiologist Dr. Donna Kim of Willowbrook has worked with Adventist GlenOaks Hospital since 2006. She always treats patients with kindness and respect, taking the time to explain procedures to make sure patients feel calm and understand what is going on.
“Dr. Kim’s compassionate care for patients and staff is unending,” according to her nomination. “She treats everyone like they are a member of her own family.”
“When I come to the hospital and work with patients, I think about how I would want to be treated were I in their shoes,” Kim said. “Every patient faces their own set of challenges and I always want to be mindful of what they are going through.” Dr. Mark Metzl, Stewardship:
An Electrophysiologist, Dr. Mark Metzl of Northbrook has worked with the hospital since 2007. His unwavering dedication to excellence and compassionate care has raised the level of service provided in the Adventist GlenOaks Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute.
“Dr. Metzl consistently demonstrates his focus on improving patient care through training, speaking engagements and more,” according to his nomination. “He has worked with the Cath Lab staff and management to ensure efficiency and provide the best clinical care.”
“Health care is in a state of flux, and we have to make sure we are as efficient as possible in how we operate,” Metzl said. “Only by being good stewards of our finances can we help patients and continue to succeed as our field changes.” Dr. Geanine Pirc, Excellence:
Dr. Geanine Pirc of Willow Springs is the chairperson of the hospital’s Anesthesia Department, serving in that capacity since 2012. She has a deep commitment to professional development, high quality clinical care and fostering a harmonious working environment.
“She has gone above and beyond in upgrading our Anesthesia Department,” according to her nomination. “She is very helpful and supportive to the staff and other hospital departments, and she is always there when needed.”
“Patients need us to provide quality care every moment of every day,” Pirc said. “That’s why I have high expectations of the Anesthesiology staff, and they respond by doing their utmost at all times.” Dr. Muhammad Shahzad, Inclusiveness:
Working with the hospital since 2003, Dr. Muhammad Shahzad values teamwork toward common goals over individual needs and desires. The Lombard resident’s dedication shines forth in all he does.
“He is always willing to help the patient and the patient’s family,” according to his nomination. “He is a dedicated and excellent doctor.”
“Only by working together can we provide the best care possible,” Shahzad said. “No one person can do this alone. It takes an entire team.”
