Christopher Lyons Memorial Walk to benefit Adventist GlenOaks Hospital Therapeutic Day School
Summary: The sixth annual Christopher Lyons Memorial Walk will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29th at Meyers Woods, 2500 Oldfield Road in Darien. The fundraiser is held in memory of Christopher Lyons, an Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day School graduate.
For the past five years, Christopher Lyons’ family has gathered supporters on the Saturday after Thanksgiving for a walk in their late son’s honor. The Christopher Lyons Memorial Walk has raised more than $214,238 from 617 generous donors, said his mother, Sue Lyons.
“The walk each year continues to be a testament to our continued journey of healing,” said Lyons, a Darien resident. “Chris was so special to us and his memory continues to make a huge difference for the students of the school that changed not only his life, but ours as well.”
Christopher enrolled at the Adventist GlenOaks Hospital Therapeutic Day School when he was in seventh grade. He spent a year of high school at a Montana boarding school before returning to the therapeutic day school’s west campus in North Aurora for his senior year. Shortly after graduating in 2007, Chris passed away unexpectedly.
That same year, his parents launched the Christopher Lyons Memorial Fund with the GlenOaks Hospital Foundation and then started the Christopher Lyons Memorial Walk in 2009. Since the inception of the Christopher Lyons Memorial Fund, the Lyons family has helped provide the school with items such as computers, Smart Boards, sewing machines, speakers, iPods, guitars and more.
Lyons said her goal is to continue to raise money to help provide more opportunities for expressive therapy for students.
“What the Lyons family has done the last six years is nothing short of amazing and inspirational,” said Michelle Hess, executive director of the GlenOaks Hospital Foundation. “They have shown how one family’s dedication and passion can make such an enormous impact on the lives of so many.”
Designed for children with learning disabilities and emotional and psychiatric problems, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital Therapeutic Day School was founded in 1995. Elementary through high-school age students earn normal academic credits while addressing their therapeutic goals. Along with traditional individual and group therapy, the school uses recreation, pets, music and art activities with certified therapists to help with physical, social and emotional growth. There are campuses in Glendale Heights, North Aurora and Glen Ellyn, as well as a Transition Program for young adults.
