Glendale Heights – More than 100 local leaders and community members celebrated the career of Dr. Joseph Shanahan, former emergency department medical director at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital.
Local area residents and leaders, hospital staff and administrators as well as emergency services personnel attended an open house in honor of Shanahan Thursday, March 21, at the Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale. Green was the prominent theme at the event, with attendees sporting green shirts, green ties and other green apparel in honor of Shanahan, a celebrated Irishman and a frequent marcher in the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Performances by the Trinity Irish Dancers also marked the occasion.
Shanahan was then honored at the annual Adventist GlenOaks Hospital EMS Appreciation Dinner Thursday evening. Shanahan was led into the room by bagpiper Lt. Chris Wilson from the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District, and those in attendance rose to give Shanahan a standing ovation.
“We are here today to celebrate and to honor our EMS partners and you, Dr. Joseph Shanahan, and all that you do every single day to care for the residents of our community,” said Bruce C. Christian, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital chief executive officer. “Yours has been a tireless job that takes stamina, uncompromising courage and unwavering dedication.”
A Burr Ridge resident, Shanahan headed the Adventist GlenOaks Hospital emergency department since its opening more than 30 years ago. Shanahan is now the hospital’s executive administrative liaison, a role he’s filled since January.
Christian said he was grateful Shanahan had agreed to stay at the hospital and take on the liaison role.
“This man has given more to this community and to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in the 33 plus years he’s been here than any individual or any group of people could possibly have contributed,” Christian said.
“This man is the dearest friend that our hospital and our community could have, because he does not know what the word ‘no’ means,” Christian added. “He gives and gives and gives.”
Among those attending the annual event were emergency services personnel from the Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glenside and Lombard fire protection districts.
