Care for Geriatric Patients

A special hospital unit is designated to support the needs of older adults in decline because of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, depression or other mental health issues.  Our team includes geriatric psychiatrists and other experts in the needs of this patient group. While hospitalized, older adults with behavioral and/or medical challenges receive holistic and intensive care on a short-term basis.  Older adults who need ongoing day care can be referred to our outpatient geriatric services offered through Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, the Adventist OPTIONS Outpatient Behavioral Health Center, or at community locations close to home. Inpatient services include:

  • Expertise in treating early-stage dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety, confusion, wandering, paranoia, psychosis, agitation or other concerns.
  • Medical intervention for older adults who have a persistent mental illness condition that has reached an acute (crisis) state.
  • Collaboration between psychiatrists, primary care physicians and other specialists.
  • Expressive therapies, including art, music and recreational therapies.
  • Medication management and monitoring.
  • Medical management for elderly patients with severe medical needs such as dialysis, chronic wounds, infectious diseases, acute illness or other medical concerns.  Our Behavioral Health collaborates with medical physicians and surgeons to provide coordinated care that addresses individual’s physical and emotional needs.
  • Discharge planning with special emphasis on living arrangements — to make sure the older adult is in a safe and supportive environment where his or her needs can be met.
