GlenOaks Transition Program: Helping Young Adults Gain Independence

The Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day Schools are the first in Illinois to launch an innovative, state-accredited program aimed at helping young adults gain the life skills they need to become independent adults.

This unique Transition Program works with young adults ages 17 to 21 who have an IEP.  Participants include:

  • Students enrolled in community college, who may be taking courses on campus or online.

  • Students enrolled in online community college courses, who can benefit from individualized mentoring through our program as they complete their coursework off-campus.
  • Students who attend on-campus classes at community college and who attend the Transition Program for homework help, tutoring and mentoring.

Unique Curriculum Builds Life Skills

Our unique programming aims at helping young adults gain skills they need to study, work and live independently. Each day has a different focus.  Here’s a look at some of our daily programming.

3:30-4 Mondays-Thursdays – Goal setting meeting for students.

4:00-5:30 Mondays-Thursdays – Academic support for high school credit and/or college course support.

5:30-6:30 – Seminar class.

  • Mondays: “Health Management.” Topics include medication management, making healthy lifestyle choices, hygiene and self-care.
  • Tuesdays: “Career Exploration.” A career counselor helps students match their own strengths and interests with career options. Students also learn about basic work skills, applying for a job, job performance expectations, and more.
  • Wednesdays: “Money Management.” The basics on banking, using and managing credit cards, purchasing, prioritize their spending.
  • Thursdays: “Daily Life Skills.” Focuses on managing your own home, doing your laundry, grocery shopping, taking public transportation and other skills necessary to live independently.

6:30-7:00 – Dinner

7:00-8:30 – Mental health groups. In a collaborative setting, students work on issues such as relationship building (help with dating, healthy/appropriate relationships, family relationships, parenting skills).

Fridays: Outings, fitness and other hands-on learning. Directed by a recreational therapist, the Friday program meets at a park district/sports hub.  Many weeks include field trip outings that offer graduated exposure to community settings in an appropriate and healthy manner. Outings include field trips to locations such as bowling alleys, music venues and restaurants. Alternate weeks include fitness activities at the sports hub, as well as opportunities for students to perform volunteer work with senior citizens and other members of the community.
