Nov. 14 discussion focuses on diabetes

Bolingbrook – Diabetes and how to prevent it will be the subject of a free presentation Nov. 14 at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Dr. Sumitha Panicker will present “Pre-Diabetes: Know Your Numbers” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14. The Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital CREATION Health Chronic Disease Management Center will host the discussion at the hospital, 500 Remington Blvd. in Bolingbrook.

Panicker will discuss diabetes prevention and answer questions about meter numbers, A1C screenings and other diabetes related topics. There will also be an A1C diabetes screening available to participants.

To register for this free discussion, call (630) 856-7525, or visit www.keepingyouwell.com/abh and click on “Education & Events.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, representing a little more than 8 percent of the total population. Of these, 7 million people remain undiagnosed.

An estimated 79 million people are considered pre-diabetic.

“The number of people with diabetes in this country continues to grow,” Panicker said. “The only way to combat this growth is through education, and teaching people how they can better care for themselves, to avoid a diabetes diagnosis.”
