Housekeeping supervisor named Employee of the Year

Hinsdale – He’s not a nurse or a physician at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, but Harris Longshaw says his job is still about healing patients.

As a supervisor in the environmental services department, Longshaw strives to make every stay in the hospital a pleasant one.  For those reasons and more, Longshaw was named the hospital’s 2008 Employee of the Year.

“I don’t like to hear complaints, so I try to do things right the first time,” Longshaw said.  “I do what’s best for our patients so their satisfaction is high.”

“I’ve seen the stack of compliment cards Harris has received from our patients and staff,” said David L. Crane, the hospital’s chief executive officer. “Patients respond to him because of his warm personality and caring spirit.  He genuinely wants patients to have a comfortable stay and works hard to achieve that.”

Longshaw, 50, of Downers Grove, joined Adventist Hinsdale Hospital in 2002 as a housekeeper.  He’s been known to take long walks with patients and visitors, personally escorting them to their destination.

“He’s a perfectionist,” said his supervisor, Linda Bowman.  “If he thinks the floors don’t look just right, he’ll go back and do it again, on his own.  He always goes above and beyond what’s expected.”

Longshaw was recently promoted to a supervisory position, a move up the ladder that his peers fully supported.

“Harris is just so peaceful and unassuming,” said James Today, administrative director of patient experience and facilities.  “He has a special spirit about him that’s very service-oriented.  He’s cooperative and flexible and has a subtle sense of humor.  You always see him with a grin on his face.  We easily recognized him as a leader in the department.”

Longshaw was recognized at Adventist Midwest Health’s annual Employee of the Year celebration, held Feb. 4 at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook. Each Employee of the Year receives a plaque and a $1,000 check.
