Hospital to present free colon health program

Bolingbrook – In recognition of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital will present a free program, “Take Charge of Your Colon,” on March 18.

Participants will learn about colon cancer risk factors, the latest treatment options and the importance of colon screenings. Home fecal testing kits also will be available.

“Like any cancer, early detection of colon cancer is the best treatment,” said Dr. Tamer Atassi, who will lead the presentation.

While everyone is at risk for colon cancer, research shows those with a family history of the disease are more susceptible. Risk also increases with age; both men and women ages 50 and older should be screened yearly.

The cure rate for colon cancer is more than 90 percent when detected early, yet it remains the nation's second-leading cause of cancer deaths.

More than 130,000 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer this year, and more than 56,000 will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.

“That's why screening is so important,” said Atassi, a board certified gastroenterologist.

The presentation is set for 7 p.m. March 18 at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, 500 Remington Bld, Bolingbrook. To register, call (630) 856-7525 or visit and click on “education and events.”
