Hospital offers free ovarian cancer seminar

Hinsdale – In recognition of the threat of ovarian cancer, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is hosting a free program on ovarian cancer awareness and treatment options.

Dr. Sudarshan Sharma, a gynecological oncologist, will be presenting the program from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Hinsdale Community House, 415 W. Eighth St., Hinsdale.

“Ovarian cancer is a tremendously difficult experience,” Sharma said. “This program is an opportunity for women to learn when they are at risk and what the treatment options are for ovarian cancer.”

The program is open to the community and geared for women of all ages. According to Sharma, only 24 percent of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. In fact, most of these cases are diagnosed after the cancer has spread through out other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat. “While this type of cancer typically targets women over 55 years old,” Sharma said. “It is never too early to start learning about the symptoms, stages, and treatment of ovarian cancer.”

In addition, Sharma recently performed Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s first surgical procedure using the daVinci Surgical System for a woman with cancer of the uterus. He performed a hysterectomy and node dissection using this groundbreaking technology leaving the patient with only six small incisions.

Sharma, a 14-year veteran of laparoscopic procedures, praised the daVinci’s ability to perform procedures in a minimally invasive manner and looks forward to using it to treat patients who have cancer of the cervix or ovaries.

For Sharma’s cancer patients, the daVinci Surgical System eases the surgical process. With only a few tiny cuts, women may leave the hospital within one to two days following the surgery. Most will recover within a week.
