Bolingbrook resident aims to make hospital ‘employer of choice’

Bolingbrook – Human resources director Shana Ross describes her department as “the hub of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.”

“In HR, we deal with personal issues, employee relations, and benefits – all issues that hit very close to home for our more than 600 employees,” Ross said. “Employees come to us for advice on their personal career track. They want to know how to do their jobs better. And they come with ideas on how we can do better. It’s a big responsibility.”

Among Ross’s goals: that Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital would become an “employer of choice” in the Chicago area and that the hospital would achieve employee engagement levels in the 90th percentile.

“Shana is someone that our other leaders can go to for information and support,” said Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital Chief Executive Officer Rick Mace. “Her passion for her work and her pursuit of excellence is an inspiration. She has a drive for positive change and the patience and the tenacity to see it through.”

For her commitment to Adventist Midwest Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, Ross was one of five Adventist Midwest Health leaders to receive the organization’s pillar award at the quarterly leadership development institute in October.

In December 2007, Shana Ross was hired as director of human resources at the new Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. She was recruited here by Don Russell, vice president of human resources at Adventist Midwest Health; Russell had managed Ross when the two worked together at Adventist Healthcare in Rockville, Md. A Virginia native, it was the first time Ross had lived away from the East Coast. She welcomed the opportunity to further her career.

Her greatest challenge lies in recruiting staff in the highly-competitive medical industry.

“There are more than 60 healthcare facilities – hospitals, medical offices, clinics and other sites – within a 20-mile radius of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital,” Ross said. “We strive to set ourselves apart. That means recruiting the best possible candidates for our positions.”

The Bolingbrook resident oversees a staff of four. She holds two master’s degrees: one in human resources management and another in business administration.
