Adventist Hinsdale Hospital photo opp: Nurses Week ‘Blessing of the Hands’

Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital Chaplain Vicky Syren, left, blesses the hands of nurse Martha Kokenes during a Blessing of the Hands ritual, held annually during Nurses Week.

Adventist Midwest Health will celebrate 2011 National Nurses Week with a variety of activities, including “Blessing of the Hands” ceremonies at its suburban Chicago hospitals. Blessing of the Hands is an annual ritual conducted for caregivers by members of the hospital’s pastoral care department and will take place Wednesday, May 11 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N. Oak St., Hinsdale. It has already taken place at Adventist Bolingbrook, Adventist GlenOaks and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals.

“Blessing of the Hands serves as an affirmation of the healing power of Christ as expressed through our nurses, doctors and other caregivers,” said John Rapp, regional vice president of ministries and mission at Adventist Midwest Health. “We anoint their hands, the channels through which God’s healing flows, with oil because oil in the Bible represents the healing presence of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.”

Caregivers are given cards that express prayers for compassion, understanding, and strength: “Give to me, Lord, strength for this selfless service and enable me to give hope to those I am called to serve.”

Members of the media are invited to attend but should RSVP with Lisa Parro at 630.312.7508. Blessing of the Hands will take place at various times in all areas of the hospital.
