Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital recognizes physicians for excellence

Bolingbrook – Five Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital physicians were recognized for outstanding dedication and service. Nominated by hospital staff and chosen by the executive team, these physicians clearly demonstrate they are living the mission of Adventist Midwest Health in their personal and professional lives.

The honorees are:

  • Inclusiveness: Dr. Meechai Tessalee, a specialist in interventional cardiology who lives in Westmont. Tessalee is chairman of the department of medicine at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and is renowned for his close collaboration with fellow physicians. He works closely with primary care and other medical specialists on the hospital staff in supporting best practices. He was recently recognized for establishing a more balanced schedule for physicians on call for the emergency room. “I tried to achieve a nice balance to benefit all physicians involved. Collaborating with all the other physicians was challenging, but it made me realize we all have the same goal: providing excellent patient care,” Tessalee said. Tessalee speaks Thai, but says he does not see many patients from the Thai community. He also speaks some Spanish. “Language is extremely important, and it helps tremendously to be able to speak directly to a patient in his or her native language, rather than rely on an interpreter,” Tessalee said. “Even if you know only a few words, the patients light up to hear their native language. It affords a real connection.”

  • Integrity: Dr. Srilakshmi Vemareddy, a specialist in internal medicine who lives in Naperville. She has been treating Adventist Midwest Health patients since 2007. She is one of the few physicians who still makes house calls. Vemareddy also visits patients at assisted living facilities and care centers. She speaks Hindi and Telugu. “It was an honor to receive this award, and to know that I have the appreciation of my patients, as well as the staff,” Vemareddy said.

  • Christian service: Dr. Adam Likavec, an anesthesiologist who lives in Chicago. He has been treating patients at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital since the hospital opened in 2008 and has been practicing medicine for almost five years. “My philosophy is to take the best care we possibly can of every patient,” he said. Likavec serves on the hospital’s pharmacy and therapeutics committee.

  • Excellence: Dr. Jason Goliath, a general surgeon and medical director of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital’sBreast Center. He lives in Hinsdale and has been treating Adventist Midwest Health patients for two years. Goliath is known for spending an exceptional amount of time with his patients in preparing them for surgery. He has been instrumental in ensuring quality care and offering the most up-to-date treatment for patients in general surgery. Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital’s Breast Center offers the latest in breast cancer-detecting technology, surgery, physical therapy and education in a comfortable setting. The program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are dedicated to breast health and care. “We want to be able to take care of all the breast health needs of our female patients,” Goliath said. “Since the opening of the breast center, we have been able to accommodate patients we previously would have referred elsewhere. Our goal is to give world-class, state-of-the-art treatment in a compassionate manner. I believe strongly in the Adventist Christian mission, and in treating the soul as well as the body.”

  • Stewardship: Dr. Richard Bulger, a specialist in otolaryngology who lives in Hinsdale. Bulger was on the staff of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital’s predecessor, Adventist Bolingbrook Medical Center, for 25 years and has been treating Adventist Midwest Health patients for 38 years. Bulger strongly supported the founding of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, which opened in 2008. “I’m dedicated to the continued excellence and improvement of the hospital,” Bulger said. “Our commitment to the hospital and to serving the community remains strong. I feel honored to be associated with such a humanitarian organization.” Bulger added that patient care is his primary concern. “I want them to have the best care as quickly as possible,” he said.

“These physicians clearly demonstrate how to live the mission of Adventist Midwest Health in their daily care of patients, their teamwork with colleagues and staff, and how they inspire hospital staff,” said Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital chief executive officer Rick Mace. “They go above and beyond giving of their time and resources to extend the healing ministry of Christ.”
