Cardiac Rehabilitation

Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital provides an excellent cardiac rehabilitation program for patients who have heart problems or are recovering from surgery.

Our program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This 3-year certification represents the highest quality in patient care—only 200 programs in the country and only 6 in Illinois have been re-certified.

Through our innovative program you will collaborate with exercise physiologists, dieticians, cardiologists and cardiac nurses to create an individualized exercise program.

The three phases of cardiac rehabilitation at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital are inpatient, outpatient and maintenance. Each patient undergoes a thorough evaluation before beginning a rehabilitation program that is specifically tailored to their individual needs and cardiac condition. Our personalized cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to place you on a path to improved physical, mental and spiritual health.

Phase One: Inpatient Services

Cardiac patients begin the inpatient rehabilitation program shortly after a heart event or surgery, while still hospitalized. Nurses and exercise physiologists work under the direction of a physician to help the patient undergo progressive exercises and increased walking. In both inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, the patient’s heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure and oxygen levels are monitored while the patient is exercising.

Phase Two: Outpatient Service

Phase two of cardiac rehabilitation, the outpatient phase, begins two to four weeks after the patient is discharged.  Exercise sessions are scheduled for one hour, three times a week. The program takes about 12 weeks to complete, depending on your progress. This service is available at several locations and is covered by most insurance programs.

The program includes nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian, and educational classes on risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Phase Three: Maintenance Programs

During the optional phase three of cardiac rehabilitation, a special cardiovascular maintenance program can be designed for graduates of the Outpatient program who are independent but still find supervision during exercise beneficial.  Consent from your physician is required.  Maintenance programs are typically not covered by most insurance plans.
