Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (Lap Band®)

The Procedure

The Lap Band® is the only bariatric procedure approved by the FDA for individuals with a BMI as low as 30 kg/m2 with weight related health conditions. Instead of cutting, stapling or rerouting of the intestines, the Lap Band® is placed on the upper portion of the stomach near where your esophagus and stomach meet. The band is then connected to a port placed below the surface of your skin. By accessing the port during a simple office procedure, the band can be adjusted (tightened or loosened) to customize your weight loss. To help provide a visual, it is similar to a blood pressure cuff placed around the stomach.

How It Works*

  • The band artificially reduces stomach capacity and limits the amount of food that can be eaten at a meal
  • Pressure from the band generates a background sense of satiety that persists throughout the day
  • Helps you fill up quicker and stay fuller longer
  • Adjusting the band allows your surgeon to customize weight loss as long as the band is in place

Advantages

  • 40-50% excess weight loss
  • Reversible, when removed anatomy is normal
  • Same day surgery, on average
  • No cutting, stapling or re-routing of your stomach or intestines
  • No malabsorption of nutrients or food
  • Low risk of nutritional deficiencies
  • Individuals with a lower BMI (> 30kg/m2 or greater) are eligible for a Lap band®
