After Your Procedure

How Will I Feel?

You can expect some soreness the first few days after surgery, but your surgeon will prescribe medications to treat any pain.  Get plenty of rest, but do try to walk as much as you can comfortably, to prevent blood clots. Do not lift anything heavy.  You can most likely return to light work duties in a few days and normal physical activity and exercise in 4-6 weeks.

Beginning Your New Life with a Band

Your weight-management team will help you with your new lifestyle and eating habits. This is very important to your weight loss surgery success, so stay focused on allowing your body to recover from surgery, and feeling good.

For the first 24 hours after surgery you may have small frequent amount of water whether it be the amount of a teaspoon or sucking on ice chips to keep you hydrated during your initial recovery.

  • The first two weeks post-operatively you will begin with a liquid diet
  • The following two to four weeks you will slowly introduce pureed foods and then move onto softer foods such as cottage cheese, yogurt, soft scrambled eggs.
  • At six weeks post operatively you will be able to begin solid foods.

Exercise

You will want to start engaging in physical activity and exercise immediately and within six weeks after surgery be performing low impact aerobic and strength exercising.

Rate of Weight Loss

Your rate of weight loss will be about 1-2 pounds per week and steady. Many patients lose faster than this initially, but the rate will slow down. This rate allows for safe weight loss with fewer nutritional complications.
