Hinsdale – A lifelong Hinsdale resident was named Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s
Volunteer of the Month (October) after just seven months on the job. Since
February, Karlene Guess has served as dining room hostess during the lunch
shift every Tuesday. Guess said she started volunteering because she wanted to
make a difference in her community; she chose the hospital because she and her
two children were born here.
“I figured I should give back since I’ve lived here
all my life,” the 51-year-old said. “And whenever I go to the hospital and see
the volunteers, they’re always smiling. They’re all so happy!”
Working in the dining hall is rewarding because it
allows Guess to interact with many different people.
“If I see someone who needs help carrying their
tray because they’re in a wheelchair or using crutches, I seek them out to help
them,” said Guess, who has a 17-year-old son and 21-year-old daughter.
Guess also volunteers at PADS, a local homeless
shelter, and the First Congregational Church of Downers Grove.
Jane Dawes, cafeteria and catering
manager, said she appreciates Guess’s help and wishes she volunteered more than
once a week.
“We could use one Karlene every day
of the week,” Dawes said.
